Do you get butterflies in your stomach thinking about auditioning? Well, really, there is nothing to worry about! Come prepared, get plenty of sleep and you will have fun – we promise.

With auditions for our big musical A Chorus Line coming up (sign up here!), we’ve asked some YAFies to share their auditioning experiences and tips.

First up, we have the beautiful and extremely Emily Lu! You may have seen her in our recent productions of Godspell and Weird Sisters.

Emily, what’s it like auditioning for a YAF show?

The whole process is very exciting! Of course, there are some nerves prior to the audition, but it’s normal. The YAF team tries to make everyone comfortable during the audition, so there is really no reason to be scared. :)

And the waiting… The results don’t come asap, as lots and lots of people audition every year, but it sure does come pretty quick! :D

What do you do to prepare for an audition?

Memorize anything that has to be memorized, warm up very well before the audition starts.

Top tips?

Always be early. No one wants to rush into an audition! Arriving early allows you to be mentally prepared.

First impressions say a lot. You want to come across as someone who’s approachable and easy to work with.

Be switched on 100% of the time and take initiative. When they ask for volunteers, always go for it!

When different groups of people go up to dance/act/sing, watch them closely and see if there is something that you could take in from what they’re doing. For dancing – it could just be the way they do a specific move, or seeing their personality come through their dancing. Simultaneously, keep reviewing the choreography on the side so that you wouldn’t forget!

Always be confident – you want to look comfortable and enthusiastic! Whether singing or dancing, be sure to show your personality. It will really make you stand out from the rest. Don’t forget to smile!

What is your favourite thing about being in a show?

Seeing how the show evolves, especially during production week, when you get to go to the theatre! Going to rehearsals, seeing the rest of the cast, getting to know them, and becoming like family. :)

What are YAF rehearsals like?

Fast-paced, but fun! Cast members also get to be involved in the creative process as well through devising.

In rehearsals, there are many opportunities to work with different people of different schools and different ages. This really made me open up to speak up about my ideas, and it also allowed me to be come more sociable with the cast.

YAF is just bursting with talent, and has been the best team I’ve ever worked with.
